4th International Symposium on Lightning, Thunderstorm and Atmospheric Phenomena (ISL-TAP 2023)

CANCELED !

Dear colleagues,

Dear friends,

As we approach the final preparations for our 4th Lightning, Storms, and Atmospheric Phenomena Symposium, we want to inform you about a major change regarding the upcoming edition scheduled for October 12th, 13th, and 14th, 2023.

We have received an impressive number of requests from participants expressing their preference for online participation via video instead of attending the event in person. While video presentations proved to be essential during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic, we cannot overlook the fundamental importance of direct interactions, which often occur during breaks, meals, and informal moments. We firmly believe that these face-to-face exchanges foster genuine connections and collaboration, representing the essence of human relationships.

However, we must acknowledge the trend towards virtual "meetings" and "exchanges." Many of you have informed us about drastic cuts or even complete elimination of travel budgets. The Covid-19 pandemic has entrenched and further developed video conferencing as a means to achieve significant cost savings. Reverting to the previous model now seems quite challenging. Additionally, we have taken into consideration the current global circumstances, including challenges related to international travel and evolving health and safety measures.

After careful consideration, we have decided to modify the format of our symposium. Originally planned as an in-person event, we have now chosen to host it through the Zoom video platform, as the overwhelming majority wished for.

By opting for an online symposium, we are confident that we can maintain the event's scientific integrity and ensure equal access for all participants, regardless of their geographical location. The 4th Lightning, Storms, and Atmospheric Phenomena Symposium will indeed take place on two days (the planned tourist day is no longer taking place), October 12th and 13th, 2023, via Zoom .

However, for the next edition in 2025, it appears that the time has come to completely rethink the Symposium's structure and find a new approach, which will be the subject of an announcement in the first half of 2024.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We look forward to your active participation in our upcoming virtual symposium.

Best regards,

Raymond Piccoli

Chairman of the Symposium on Lightning, Thunderstorm, and Atmospheric Phenomena (ISL-TAP).

The International Symposium on Lightning, Thunderstorm and Atmospheric Phenomena (ISL-TAP) is a meeting organized by the Laboratoire de Recherche sur la Foudre (Lightning Research Laboratory).

This event is intended to promote interdisciplinary exchanges between scientists in the fields of lightning and thunderstorms, and to present the work in progress in the thematic areas covered.

The Symposium will take place over two days, October 12 and 13, 2023 (from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. French time).

Participation

The symposium is open only to professional researchers working in the field, and other who contribute actively to our understanding of lightning, storm or atmospheric related phenomena.

Thematic Areas

  • The study of lightning and its effects.
  • Ball lightning / natural plasma.
  • Storm transcient luminous event in hight atmosphere.
  • Thunderstorm prediction, observation, modeling and lightning detection.
  • Phenomena link to lightning and thunderstorm.
  • Lightning medical research.
  • Sociological / ethnological aspects of lightning and thunderstorms.
  • All Atmospheric luminous phenomena.

Registration Fees

  • Participation in the symposium is subject to registration fees.
    • Regular attendee : 35 euros.

  • Registration fee include :
    • The participation in the symposium.
    • Publication of communications in the proceedings of the symposium (in PDF format, 15 pages maximum).
    • The sending of the video of their intervention to each of the speakers.
    • The publication of scientific communications in public access via YouTube approximately one month after the Symposium.
    • The biography with photo of each of the speakers on the dedicated web page of the Symposium.

Timeline & Format

  • The symposium will take the form of contributed oral presentations, each 30 minutes long with an additional 10 minutes for questions and discussion.
  • As an international event, English is the official language during the Symposium. However, in the context of promoting the use of French in sciences, French may exceptionally be used provided that the slides of the presentation are in English (or vice versa).
