Lightning: causes, behaviour and impacts

Lighting is an atmospheric phenomenon resulting from a combination of microelectrical changes within active cloud systems, which respond in turn to micro to macroscale circulation patterns and instabilities within weather systems. The evolution and behaviour of different lightning types are not well known however, in either field or experimental settings. Lightning dynamics and impacts on the land surface depend on the nature of the land surface topography, vegetation, soils and geology, and can also cause substantial impacts on the human environment, including fire risk, burns and death to individuals, and electrical outages. This session aims to draw together researchers from different disciplines to explore the interconnected nature of lightning causes, behaviour and impacts, based on a range of evidence types (field, laboratory, experimental, theoretical) and on different spatial and temporal scales. This session therefore invites contributions from workers interested in lighting from any fields of the physical or social sciences, including cloud physics, remote sensing, atmospheric dynamics and modelling, atmospheric chemistry, geology, geophysics, risk assessment, health epidemiology, cultural studies, anthropology and archaeology.
